Description

“Veliki Pažut” is a specially protected area as it hosts one of the last remaining semi-naturally preserved mouths of two lowland rivers, Mura and Drava, with all its hydrodynamics, habitats, and endangered species.

German tamarisk (Myricaria germanica) or the nearly extinct little tern (Sterna albifrons) are some of the most endangered plants and animals which occur here. Both, little tern and German tamarisk lost their habitats throughout Europe due to the regulation of rivers. They only survived in a few places where dynamic rivers still exist. “Veliki Pažut” is therefore a unique area and protected area.
