Description

The old town center, as we see today in Koprivnica, was formed mainly during the Baroque and Historicism styles from the 17th century till the beginning of the 20th century. At that time the free royal town flourished with all administrative bodies, elected by the citizens. Koprivnica became the main trade and craft center of Podravina with effective municipal functions on a wider region of Northern Croatia and Southern Hungary. Inside the fortification remained only a town arsenal from 1714, which was renewed in 2015. Only a few civil houses, the old town hall remained from the Baroque period, and also sacral buildings of the Franciscan monastery and the parish church of St. Nicolas.

The center of economic activities and social life moved outside of the military fortification – into the suburb on the Piazza, Florian Square, and »Pod Pikom«. Numerous shops open and craft flourishes. Craftsmen organize themselves into nine larger guilds and the end of the 17th till the end of the 19th century is considered as their golden age of development. Buildings are built in Baroque and primarily in Historicism style – especially on today’s squares, Zrinski, Jelačić, Florian and Youth Square, and in Esterova and Nemčićeva Streets.
